Your hair color is an investment in your appearance and you want it to stay looking great. So, the first tip in keeping it looking great is to wait at least a day after getting your color before shampooing. This gives the color a chance to ‘set.’ According to stylist Kennedi at Changez, washing colored or highlighted hair every day pulls out the toner and the color begins to fade faster. She recommends NOT washing processed hair daily.
Web MD recommends using a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner because sulfates can dull or fade your hair. Color safe shampoo is highly recommended.

Some other suggestions to keep your color or perm lasting longer includes water. Seriously. Shampoo using luke warm water. Hot water tends to fade color faster. For you swimmers, watch out for chlorine. Chlorine can change you hair color and damage the outermost layer of hair strands which are already stressed by being colored. Web MD also suggests that you wet and condition your hair, and put on a tight-fitting swimming cap.
A word to the wise about hot tubs and color processed hair: Hot tubs are a no no as well. They make you sweat profusely. The heat will open the hair cuticle, allowing the color molecules to move away from the hair shaft. The same is true for tanning booths.
